Artist statement
The drawings in this exhibition were all made during my two week stay in Iasi.
They are personal notes for future paintings and the record of past experiences. Most were made in three locations: Copou Park, the Botanical Gardens and the small park close to Piața Unirii. I preferred the botanics on grey days; the masses of trees by the lake more mysterious, appearing in blocks of grey – greenish or reddish.
The park in the centre is garden-like and overlooked by tower blocks. I traced in pencil the thin trunks of young trees against a grid of windows.
Meanwhile, children followed a squirrel, pointing as it traversed tree tops above. A woman, about 50, roller bladed up and down the same short path, shifting her weight to turn.
Together in the park – practising, observing, enjoying being in space and travelling through it, watching others do the same.
